Helping keep British Motorcycles on the road for over 30 years - established 1977

1954 Indian Woodsman

This project was a total nut-and-bolt build. It was not a restoration as such, as the motorcycle was incomplete when I bought it and was not originally a street legal motorcycle.

Engine:

The engine displacement was increased to 612cc using new steel flywheels (increased stroke), steel con rod, and forged aluminum high compression, big bore piston in new aluminum cylinder with steel liner. Compression ratio is 10.5 X 1. Removal of cylinder spacer increases compression to 12.5 X 1 if desired. The cylinder head was modified to accept custom fabricated intake manifold and new Amal GP 1 1/2 inch carburetor with remote mount matchbox float. New custom rocker stands were fabricated from 6061 T6 aluminum alloy. New extra large titanium intake and exhaust valves with 5/16ths inch valve stems, NASCAR style valve guides, titanium lash caps, and intake and exhaust valve guide seals all installed. Aluminum racing pushrods with hardened steel ends were fabricated.

The cylinder head was professionally ported and gas flowed to improve engine breathing. New high-lift racing cams were installed. The original Mag-dyno was replaced with updated, totally reconditioned N-1 Lucas magneto. New high capacity oil pumps installed. All new gaskets, seals and engine bearings were installed, along with custom stainless steel rocker oil feed, Hitchcocks' breather kit, and more. New exhaust and muffler, no baffles. This is a true racing engine, tuned for high performance street use. It has an amazing, crisp sound and goes like hell.

Gear box and clutch:

Gear box totally rebuilt with new bearings, seals and internal parts as required, including all new shift mechanism. New primary chain and sprockets were fitted, and new racing wet clutch was installed; no slip, no drag, easy shifting. Also installed all new kickstart parts and offset kickstart lever.

Frame & wheels:

Powder coated frame and swing arm, new Hagon shocks, new steering damper and fork head bearings, custom stainless steel fabricated speedo mount, new Smith's replica speedo (have not located original). New flanged style aluminum rims assembled with new stainless steel spokes, nipples and new tires, sprockets and chain, new brake shoes, new rear brake hub, all new cables installed. All new brake shoes and wheel bearings installed. Front brake is unique dual SLS brake similar to that used by Vincent and other quality UK manufacturers at the time.

The NOS small fuel tank was epoxy sealed, freshly painted Viper red with Indian head decals and clear coated. Modified Dime City Cycles rearsets were installed with stainless steel adaptors to accept the original folding Indian/Enfield foot pegs, which are very cool. The front forks were totally rebuilt with all new parts including springs, seals and valving. A new seat and springs installed along with new light fixtures, anti-gravity lithium ion battery and wiring. There are many stainless steel and aluminum custom manufactured parts throughout the motorcycle, from foot pegs to rocker arm oil feed and fabricated stainless steel speedo mount.
